UN-HABITAT sponsors Journalist of the Year awards
	Nairobi, 22 Dec 04 UN-HABITAT and the Kenya Union of Journalists today signed an agreement which will see the global agency actively participating in Journalist of the Year Awards by awarding cash prizes to selected winners. At a ceremony in Nairobi, Deputy Executive Director Mr. Daniel Biau signed on behalf of UN-HABITAT while KUJ secretary general Ezekiel Mutua represented the union.


Regional heads of state push for peace in the Great Lakes region
	Dar Es Salaam, 22 Dec 04 Regional Heads of State last month held a summit meeting in Tanzania aimed at getting lasting solutions to the strife torn Great Lakes Region.


Finnish students win UN-HABITAT awards
	Nairobi, 20 Dec 04 The winner of the first prize of a competition organized by UN-HABITAT in collaboration with the Government of Finland was Ms. Maria Klemetz, who will get a one-week trip to Kenya. She was followed closely by Ari Ahoren, Yoshitaka Oshima and Felix Gomez Pousa whose joint entry was second.


Experts meet in Nairobi for MDG Workshop
	Nairobi, 7 Dec 04 A group of analysts, statistical experts and urban planners from African, Latin American and Asian countries on Monday started a training workshop on data and indicators to monitor progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.


“Urban Trialogues” launched in Brussels
	Brussels, 6 Dec 04 Urban Trialogues, a new publication on inclusive planning for sustainable urban development, was launched on 6 December at the Palais Egmont in Brussels by Daniel Biau, Deputy Director of UN-HABITAT, and Mr. Kris Panneels, Head of the Belgian Multilateral Cooperation.


Five Cities to get UN Awards
	Bogotá, 3 Dec 04 Five cities are to receive United Nations awards for positively promoting the spirit of volunteerism as a contribution to local development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Known as the “City with Heart” prize, the award was set up by the United Nations and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).


UN-HABITAT granted Observer Status by the ACP Group
	Brussels, 2 Dec 04 UN-HABITAT has been granted observer status to the institutions of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States (ACP Group). The decision, which takes effect from 1 December 2004, was taken at the 80th Session of the ACP Council of Ministers held in Brussels, Belgium, from 29 November to 3 December 2004.

	Nairobi, 24 Nov 04 The United Nations Security Council this week embarked on a peace mission to Africa's Great Lakes region as part of an historic visit that started with a meeting in Nairobi to consolidate a deal aimed at ending two decades of north-south conflict between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement.

UN-HABITAT's global campaigns launched in Burkina Faso
	Ouagadougou, 18 Oct 04 Several thousand residents of an informal community on the outskirts of Ouagadougou on 12 October gathered to witness the signature of a plan of action to launch UN-HABITAT’s global campaigns on urban governance and secure tenure in Burkina Faso. The plan provides for spending amounting to US$600 million over the next seven years.


Norwegian premier visits UN-HABITAT, signs landmark agreement
	Nairobi, 13 Oct 04 A high-powered Norwegian delegation led by Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik visited UN-HABITAT headquarters on Tuesday and signed a Framework Agreement with the Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka aimed at improving the lives of slum dwellers and urban poor.

UN-HABITAT and ESRI provide two Kenyan cities software on Geographical Information Systems
	Nairobi, Kenya, 7 Oct 04 On World Habitat Day 2004, the Kenya municipalities of Nakuru and Naivasha received free Geographical Information System (GIS) software worth over US$15,000 under a joint grant programme from UN-HABITAT and the software producer, ESRI.

	Barcelona, 17 Sept 04 In a fitting conclusion to the Second World Urban Forum in Barcelona, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) leaders and UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Anna Tibaijuka, today signed a historic agreement that will elevate the working relationship between the United Nations system and local governments around the world to a new level. The agreement is aimed essentially at localizing the Millennium Development Goals to which world leaders committed themselves in the year 2000.
