Brazil holds national cities conference
	, 27 Oct 03 Brazilian cities will require $4 billion dollars over the next two decades to ensure that poor people have adequate housing, shelter and sanitation, the country’s Minister of Cities, Olivio Dutra, told a conference looking into ways of alleviating urban poverty.


Canada pledges new funding for UN-HABITAT’s Water and Sanitation Programme in Africa
	, 27 Oct 03 The Canadian Minister of International Cooperation, Ms. Susan Whelan today signed a memorandum on behalf of the Canada Fund for Africa of the Canadian International Development Agency committing over US$10 million (15 million Canadian dollars) to UN-HABITAT's Water and Sanitation Trust Fund. She congratulated UN-HABITAT for the success of the first part of the Water for African Cities programme.


UN-HABITAT unveils new Iraq reconstruction plan and an immediate needs strategy in Madrid
	, 23 Oct 03 Senior United Nations officials and representatives of donor governments gathered in the Spanish capital Madrid on Thursday for two days of talks aimed finding the funds and political consensus to rebuild Iraq. Set to play a major role if called upon, UN-HABITAT has a new game plan for longer-term urban rehabilitation and governance, and a fresh strategy for immediate needs.

The Challenge of Slums – UN-Habitat's new Global Report on Human Settlements
	Nairobi, 1 Oct 03 The world’s slums are growing, and growing, with the number people living in such dire conditions now at the 1 billion mark – making up 32 per cent of the global urban population, according to UN-HABITAT’s new Global Report on Human Settlements 2003. The report published this month entitled, The Challenge of Slums, says the crisis is such that the world will see this figure double in the next 30 years unless a concerted effort is undertaken to alleviate the situation.
