UN-HABITAT and the Kenya Union of Journalists today signed an agreement which will see the global agency actively participating in Journalist of the Year Awards by awarding cash prizes to selected winners.
At a ceremony in Nairobi, Deputy Executive Director Mr. Daniel Biau signed on behalf of UN-HABITAT while KUJ secretary general Ezekiel Mutua represented the union. The agreement will see the Safer Nairobi Project contributing enough finances to contribute to provide prizes for the following:
a) Prize for Best journalist 100,000/-
b) Prize for 1st runners up 75,000/-
c) Prize for 2nd runners up 50,000/- The Safer Nairobi project, a collaboration between UN-HABITAT and UNDP, is working towards the implementation of a citywide crime prevention and urban safety strategy together with the Nairobi City Council and the Ministry of Local Government. The project is part of the UN-HABITAT Safer Cities Programme, which is developing municipal level approaches to crime prevention in other African cities. The Safer Cities Programme will cooperate with the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) to implement one component of the co-coordinated media approach to the crime prevention and urban safety strategy in Nairobi, namely the establishment of a crime prevention and urban safety category in the Journalism of the Year Awards 2004. The crime prevention and urban safety category targets the Annual KUJ Journalism of the Year Award (JOYA) for 2004 as a suitable mechanism to acclaim and honour members of the media fraternity who have excelled in analysing crime prevention and urban safety issues in Nairobi. This is considered an excellent entry point to develop awareness and understanding among the media professionals and industry on issues of crime prevention. This initiative is expected to be complemented by other elements of the media strategy over a period of 2 years.
