Tibaijuka leads Ban Ki-Moon through grim Nairobi slum

UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs.Anna Tibaijuka, on Tuesday escorted the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, through a section of the crowded Kibera slum to give him his first taste of extreme urban poverty in Africa.
Egyptian urban sector profiles published

Egypt, one of the first RUSPS countries, has published three of its urban sector profiles for phase 1 of which there are six in total. The published profiles cover the cities of Menouf, Rosetta and Tanta and add ‘basic urban services’ as well as’ ‘local economic development’ as new themes to the existing four.
Burundi and Cyprus envoys present credentials to the Executive Director

Experts to discuss transparency in land administration

UN-HABITAT and the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), in cooperation with the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) have held a three-day expert group meeting on Transparency in Land administration at the UN headquarters in Nairobi , Kenya on 29-31 January 2007. Land remains a highly complex and contentious issue, UN-HABITAT said in a statement. “It is a critical element in achieving target 11 of the Millennium Development Goals on “Cities without slums”. It is also a critical element in the wider development agenda. There is a clear and urgent gap between the vast demand for skills in this area, and the capacity to deliver at different levels.
UN-HABITAT Executive Director meets Nairobi slum residents

During a visit to Geneva, Mrs. Tibaijuka held talks on humanitarian coordination with Mr. Markku Niskala, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, his Deputy Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Osman and the Head of the Shelter Department Mr. Graham Saunders on Friday 19 January.

Blind cyclist to carry UN-HABITAT message across Africa

This week a blind cyclist will start pedaling all the way from Cairo to Cape Town as a UN-HABITAT goodwill ambassador: “The message I want to tell all those in pain and suffering is that it is possible to pick up the pieces and start life afresh.”
