UN-HABITAT and UNHCR sign agreement to help bridge the gap between relief and development
	Geneva, 17 Dec 03 Mr. Ruud Lubbers, the High Commissioner of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, today signed an operational Memorandum of Understanding, to improve their collaboration in delivering durable shelter solutions for refugees and returnees.

Africities mayors pledge better urban services
	Yaoundé, 8 Dec 03 Mayors and local government officials from across Africa at the weekend concluded the Third Africities Summit in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with a pledge to work harder and cooperate more closely to provide better urban services to millions of citizens living in slums and informal settlements.


Norway contributes over $1 million to UN-HABITAT's Water and Sanitation Trust Fund.
	Nairobi, 5 Dec 03 The Norwegian government has signed an agreement with UN-HABITAT committing 10.24 million Norwegian Kroner (US $ 1.3. million) to the agency's Water and Sanitation Trust Fund.


Seeking better understanding of rural-urban linkages
	, 4 Dec 03 At a time of rapid urbanization in Africa, institutions of higher learning have been challenged to highlight the importance of rural-urban linkages. UN-HABITAT's Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, posed this challenge at the Sokoine University of Agriculture 2003 convocation held on 27 November 2003. In her speech, Mrs. Tibaijuka stated that the strength of these linkages would determine the living conditions of people in both urban and rural areas of Africa. Such disciplines as agricultural economics needed to be linked to urban economics through regional development planning methods, cultural anthropology, geography, social research, ecology and engineering.


African Union pledges backing for mayors in drive to alleviate urban poverty
	, 4 Dec 03 President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique pledged his support for a new decentralisation drive by mayors across Africa so that rapidly growing towns and cities can get better service delivery of water, sanitation, electricity and other essential municipal services.


Agreement reached on how to measure progress towards the right to adequate housing
	, 2 Dec 03 An agreement has been reached on how to measure the state and progressive realization of the right to adequate housing, as outlined in the Habitat Agenda and other international instruments, during an expert group meeting convened in Geneva from 26-28 November 2003. The meeting was organized by UN-HABITAT and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) - through their joint initiative, the United Nations Housing Rights Programme.

	, 2 Dec 03 Mayors from across Africa gathered in Yaoundé, Cameroon today for the Third Africities Summit of local authorities seeking to redress the continent's myriad urban problems and rapidly growing slums.

	, 1 Dec 03 Barcelona's Mayor Joan Clos met with Mr. Lars Reutersward, Director of UN-HABITAT's Global Division last week to discuss the World Urban Forum, a major United Nations meeting, which will be hosted by the Mayor during the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2004.
