UN-HABITAT and partners mull over Malawi’s sustainable urbanization

UN-HABITAT and representatives from various stakeholder interest groups this week met in Lilongwe to discuss sustainable urbanization in Malawi.
The Hague prepares to mark World Habitat Day

As part of celebrations to mark this year’s World Habitat Day, UN-HABITAT and its partners have organized global celebrations focusing on urban safety and security in The Hague, The Netherlands, 1 - 2 October. As part of the celebrations, a conference will bring together professionals working at all levels to address the challenges of urban safety and security in the developed and developing countries. The keynote speakers at the event will be welcomed by the host Wim Deetman, Mayor of The Hague and chairman of the United Cities and Local Governments’ Committee on City Diplomacy, and members of the Dutch government including Bert Koenders, Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation and Ella Vogelaar, Dutch Minister for Housing, Communities and Integration. Mr. Jan Pronk, former Dutch minister and former Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Sudan, will chair the conference.
UN-Habitat encourages young people at global ICT for Youth forum

UN-HABITAT challenged youth at the Global Forum on Youth and ICT for Development in Geneva to come up with new information and communication solutions to help young people in cities. UN-HABITAT's workshop on Youth ICTs and Urbanization focused on how information and communication technologies can help solve priority problems of youth in cities.
World leaders address UN climate meeting

United States President George Bush on Tuesday praised the new initiatives on climate change of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and pledged renewed American support for the UN in a world where he said everyone had the “right” to housing, education, health and democratic freedoms.

Additionally to the Zambia Urban Sector Profile, the Lusaka Urban Sector Profile is completed and published on the web now. The profile reflects results of the city and national consultation that were conceived as a partnership platform, co-developed with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, the Lusaka City Council, the Ministry of Finance, CARE International, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Ltd., parastatal organizations such as the National Housing Authority, and the non-governmental organization Zambia Low-Cost-Housing-Programme.
