Zambian city of Ndola hosts UH-HABITAT’s water training programme
	Ndola, Zambia, 31 Aug 04 The second phase of UN-HABITAT’s Values-based Water and Sanitation Education programme is now underway in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia following a Water for African Cities training workshop in the Zambian Copper Belt city of Ndola.


Kabul Gets New District Offices
	Kabul, Afghanistan, 21 Aug 04 Until recently, most of the District Offices in Kabul Municipality were either dilapidated or non-existent. Now, thanks to support provided by UN-HABITAT, 11 of the 17 districts in the city have an office. Mayor Ghulam Sakhi Noorzad inaugurated the newest of these offices – in District 17 – on 17 August 2004. Construction of another office in District 16 is expected to be completed later this month.


UN-HABITAT Launches Water for Asian Cities Programme in Madhya Pradesh
	Bhopal, 19 Aug 04 Six cities in the State of Madhya Pradesh in India are to benefit from an Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan of US$ 200 million, which will go towards improving the water and sanitation sector in these cities.


Housing and social integration programme starts in Serbia
	Belgrade, 17 Aug 04 UN-HABITAT on Tuesday announced that it had signed agreements with the Serbian cities of Kragujevac and Nis to begin implementation of a new social and housing integration programme for tens of thousands of war refugees and other vulnerable people in Serbia. Under a “quick start” initiative building will begin in October.


East African Ministers and UN-HABITAT Launch Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative
	Stockholm, 16 Aug 04 Rapid urbanization and poorly maintained water and sanitation systems in towns bordering Lake Victoria are severely impacting the quality of water in Africa’s biggest lake, Anna Tibaijuka, the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, said today.

	Nairobi (PANA), 12 Aug 04 About 60 per cent of the estimated one billion slum dwellers worldwide are in Africa, Kenyan Lands and Housing Minister Amos Kimunya said in Nairobi Thursday.

	Dar es Salaam, (Guardian), 11 Aug 04 UN-HABITAT has challenged African countries, cities and communities to translate the goals to have access to safe water and basic sanitation into concrete actions in order to better the lives of the people.


Pressure group calls for more urban food production in Malawi
	Blantyre (PANA), 7 Aug 04 Agri-Ecology Media, an agriculture and environment lobby group, has called on the Malawi government to support urban farming to boost food security. The group said the measure would counter rapid urbanisation and poor yields in the rural areas, which account for 95 percent of the country's agricultural produce. Charles Mkula, Secretary of the Agri-Ecology Media, said town planners should integrate urban farming into planning policies to maximise the benefits in the welfare of urban dwellers.
