Coordinator appointed for the Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People

Mr. Abdalla Abbas has been appointed as UN-HABITAT’s Coordinator for the Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People.
Japan assists UN-HABITAT rehabilitation in Iraq  
Nairobi, 31 Mar 04
UN-HABITAT’s activities in Iraq, received a boost when the Government of Japan announced today that, along with other UN agencies, three of UN-HABITAT’s projects will receive earmarked financial support as part of the US$ 360 million deposited by the Japanese Government into the UN Development Group Iraq Trust Fund on 26th March 2004.
New UN-HABITAT office in Kuwait

An Agreement between UN-HABITAT and the government of Kuwait was signed on 23 March 2004 in Kuwait City by Mr. Khaled S. Al-Jarallah, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Daniel Biau, Deputy Executive Director, on behalf of Mrs. Anna K. Tibaijuka, USG, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT.
Fresh call to implement the Habitat Agenda

UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, has called on Inter-Governmental Organizations (IGOs), and others to join in the implementation of the Habitat Agenda. She said that the problem of slum upgrading in cities around the world can effectively be solved only through the cooperation of all parties involved in development.

AGRED – a new advisory group for promoting decentralisation

UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, has established an Advisory Group of Experts on Decentralisation (AGRED) to guide the international dialogue on decentralisation and provide advice on strengthening local authorities around the world.
UN special rapporteur decries lack of women’s rights

Mr. Miloon Kothari, Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing at the UN Commission on Human Rights, decried the uphill struggle by women in poverty stricken communities against violence and discrimination, saying governments had to improve legislation to ensure adequate shelter and other rights for women.
First ever meeting of UN-HABITAT’s Advisory Group On Forced Evictions

UN-HABITAT’s Advisory Group on Forced Eviction (AGFE) met for the first time on 5 March 2005 at the organizations headquarters in Nairobi. UN-HABITAT sees the monitoring of forced evictions as an essential component for the successful implementation of the Habitat Agenda. In her welcoming address, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director challenged the group to address the voice of the urban poor who are in urgent need of adequate shelter and some form of secure tenure.
Three Asian cities get UN-HABITAT awards for women-friendly policies

Three Asian cities have been named as winners of UN-HABITAT awards for their women-friendly policies. The cities are Cebu and Naga in the Philippines, and Visakhapatnam in India. The award ceremony marking International Women’s Day was held with the mayors of the three cities on Monday, 8 March 2004.
UN Trust Fund gives US $1 million for slum upgrading in Phnom Penh

The United Nations Human Security Trust Fund is to provide US$1,082,500 for poverty reduction and slum upgrading in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
