Three Asian cities get UN-HABITAT awards for women-friendly policies

Three Asian cities have been named as winners of UN-HABITAT awards for their women-friendly policies. The cities are Cebu and Naga in the Philippines, and Visakhapatnam in India. The award ceremony marking International Women’s Day was held with the mayors of the three cities on Monday, 8 March 2004.
UN Trust Fund gives US $1 million for slum upgrading in Phnom Penh

The United Nations Human Security Trust Fund is to provide US$1,082,500 for poverty reduction and slum upgrading in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
ASEAN endorses value-based water education

Education ministers from the 10 countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this week agreed to start a seed fund through the Asian Development Bank to begin implementation of UN-HABITAT’s Value-Based Water Education programme.
UN HABITAT and UNESCAP join forces to improve living conditions of urban poor in Asia

UN-HABITAT and UNESCAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, 26 February 2004 in a bid to ensure that the two organizations work more effectively towards reducing urban poverty in Asia. The Bangkok-based United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is the regional arm of the UN Secretariat in Asia and the Pacific.
King of Thailand receives UN Award

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was presented with the Habitat Scroll of Honour Award at a special ceremony on Wednesday by Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT. The hand-crafted gold plaque was presented during an audience at the Krai Kangwon Palace.
New urban rehabilitation plan for Iraq

UN-HABITAT and officials of interim government in Iraq have agreed to embark on a new Urban and Housing Rehabilitation Programme under which UN-HABITAT will help promote sustainable post-war reconstruction. Japan has contributed US $8.8 million for a post-war school and community rehabilitation project in southern Iraq.
Vatican puts its weight behind improvements for slum dwellers

One of the most senior Vatican officials, Cardinal Renato Martino, on Monday pledged the continued support of the Roman Catholic Church to help improve the plight of slum dwellers. In a meeting with UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka he discussed the situation of slum residents in Kenya and other nations.
