	Islamabad, 10 Oct 07 Two years after a devastating earthquake in Pakistan Administered Kashmir, UN-HABITAT and Pakistani officials marked the occasion this week by describing the reconstruction and recovery programme as one of the most successful of its kind anywhere in the world in recent years.


University of Colorado and UN-HABITAT in youth research partnership
	New York, 9 Oct 07 The University of Colorado Children, Youth and Environment Centre and UN-HABITAT week signed a World Habitat Day agreement to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations with the aim of better understanding the role of youth in cities globally. This agreement comes as the world is recognizing the important role of youth, who make up to 70 percent of developing country populations, and are a key community to engage if the goal of this years HABITAT day of safe and just cities is to be reached.

Working together in making Kosovo cities safe and just
	Kosovo, 8 Oct 07 Various activities were held in different parts of Kosovo to mark the 2007 World Habitat Day organized jointly by city municipalities and UN-HABITAT’s Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme ‘Making Better Cities Together’. The focus of the activities was on looking for ideas which can be implemented through cooperation with various stakeholders and would lead to increased safety of women and children; safer public spaces open to various social, ethnic, and age groups; safer school environments and disaster prevention.

Mexican Professor wins UN-HABITAT Lecture Award 2007
	Mexico City, 4 Oct 07 Professor Martha Schteingart of El Colegio de Mexico, (Mexico City) is the winner of this year’s UN-HABITAT Lecture Award. The Award recognises outstanding and sustained contribution in the field of human settlements. Professor Schteingart delivered the winning lecture entitled “Urban Problems and Policies in Latin America: Truths and Fallacies” on 4 October, 2007 during the international conference on ‘The State of Safety and Security in World Cities, 2007’ in Monterrey, Mexico.


Pakistani earthquake victims receive financial assistance
	Mansehra, 4 Oct 07 The first batch of Pakistani rural landless who lost land as a result of the 2005 earthquake last week started receiving financial assistance from the government of Pakistan for the purchase of new land. As a result of the earthquake thousands of families were unable to rebuild their houses due to landslides and flooding which have destroyed their land.


Delegates gather in Monterrey to discuss urban crime
	Monterrey, 4 Oct 07 Over 600 delegates from some 42 countries drawn across the globe gathered in the Mexican city of Monterrey from Monday for a conference that is discussing urban crime and violence prevention. Those delivering key speeches at the opening of the meeting included UN-HABITAT's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean


Making Polish cities safer
	Warsaw, 3 Oct 07 Senior Polish officials pledged on World Habitat Day to do all they can to make the country’s cities safer and more inclusive for all their citizens. “The quality of life in our cities depends to the great extent on the level of security. We are very much interested in learning how spatial planning may improve security of city inhabitants,” Poland’s Minister of Construction, Mr. Miroslaw Barszcz, said in a speech marking World Habitat Day.


Web4Dev attracts attention at Global ICT for Youth Forum in Geneva
	Geneva, 2 Oct 07 Participants at the Global Forum on Youth and ICT for Development welcomed the chance to attend the forthcoming Web for Development Conference in Nairobi 28-30 November. At a workshop on Youth, ICTs and urbanization, young speakers suggested that access to information and communication technology be treated as a basic service and proposed that all new housing incorporate wiring for Internet connectivity, together with the electricity and water supply. Web4Dev will explore Internet solutions for youth, the biggest group of Internet users.

	Thika, 2 Oct 07 Pomp and glamour marked Kenya’s national World Habitat Day celebrations held in Thika, some 40 kilometers North-West of Nairobi. Song and dance, acrobatic performances and poems marked the day which saw a huge turnout from government officials


UN-HABITAT loses a staff member in Iraq
	Erbil,, 1 Oct 07 Mr. Nazhad Mustafa, Officer-in-Charge of the UN-HABITAT office in Erbil, Northern Iraq, Iraq passed away on 1 October 2007 at the age of 61 after a brief illness. Mr. Nazhad, a civil engineer and quantity surveyor joined UN-HABITAT in 1998 at the beginning of the Oil-for-Food Programme and has ever since made a very positive contribution to UN-HABITAT's rehabilitation programmes Iraq. He was a valued and respected senior member of the UN-HABITAT Iraq team. He leaves his wife, two daughters and two sons.


A glittering World Habitat Day opening
	The Hague, 1 Oct 07 UN-HABITAT's Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, on Monday joined members of the Dutch government and the Mayor of the Hague, Mr. Wim Deetman for the 2007 celebration of World Habitat Day.
