Rio de Janeiro, 24 Mar 10

UN-HABITAT and the government of Spain on Tuesday signed an agreement aimed at bolstering the existing cooperation between them.

At a ceremony held during the ongoing Fifth Session of the World Urban Forum, UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka and Spain’s Minister for Housing Ms. Beatriz Corredor Sierra signed the agreement.

The agreement aims at, among others, promoting collaboration between Spain and UN-HABITAT with the goal of implementing programmes, projects and cooperation activities. The two parties also undertook to study, prepare and support programmes and activities relating to environmental sustainability and human settlements.

Speaking during the occasion, Ms. Sierra reaffirmed her government’s commitment to supporting the Habitat Agenda and maintaining its position as one of the top donors to UN-HABITAT.

Mrs. Tibaijuka hailed Spain saying that it had stood by the agency during its toughest times. “It is instructive to remember that Spain convened the second donors’ conference in Seville and to me this was a demonstration of leadership on the part of Spain,” she said.

The Executive Director said without strengthening the Habitat Foundation all the activities UN-HABITAT Was engaged in would be in vain.
