USAID’s ECO-Asia project, a regional environmental programme based in Thailand, is offering grants of up to USD 10,000 to any private organization, NGO or academic institutions working in countries eligible for USAID that can demonstrate how they can improve water services in the region. |

Peter Swan: Remembering a valued colleague |

UN-HABITAT regrets to announce the passing of Mr. Peter Swan. An Australian national born in 1946, he suffered a heart attack at his adoptive home in Bangkok, Thailand on 23 November, 2008. Mr. Swan joined the agency in 1989 as officer in charge of its information division. During this period he was responsible for all video presentations at the Habitat II ‘City Summit’ in Istanbul.From 1995 to 1998 he served in Bangkok, as Coordinator of the Community Development Programme for Asia, before assuming responsibility for UN-HABITAT’s Cambodia programme in Phnom Penh. |

Mrs. Tibaijuka decries urbanisation challenges in Africa |

Yokohama, 9 Jun 08
UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka has decried rapid and unplanned urbanization in Africa which she said had led to unnecessary depletion, wastage and pollution of water resources. She spoke at the fourth Tokyo International Conference on African development 28-30 May. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda pledged to double Japan’s annual net official development assistance to the African continent to USD 1.8 billion by 2012 and offer up to USD 4 billion of ODA loans to assist in developing mainly its infrastructure. |

The international meeting was attended by over 400 delegates from all sectors including the private sector, academia, city authorities, and the United Nations. |

UN-HABITAT at the World Water Forum in Japan |

UN-HABITAT will play a key role at the 3rd World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan, to mark World Water Day on 18 March, where it will raise issues of concern about how cities cope with water management. At the opening ceremony, the agency will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Asian Development Bank aimed at forging a new Water for Asian Cities partnership similar to UN-HABITAT's highly successful Water for African Cities programme.

Fukuoka, 11 Feb 03
A team of 23 experts are currently visiting some 1,000 municipal offices and schools in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture to raise UN-HABITAT’s profile and explain its activities in the region. The promotional campaign, which started December 10 is scheduled to run through March 2003 with a series of lectures and exhibitions. The campaign is one of a number of core activities spearheaded by the agency’s Fukuoka regional headquarters for Asia.
