Islamabad, 28 Nov 12

The Pakistan Planning Commission and UN-Habitat Pakistan this week held a conference on Creative Cities and National Urban Policy aimed at helping the country's cities shore up better against natural disasters which have taken a heavy toll in Pakistan in recent years.

"The Planning Commission focuses on innovative cities," said Mr. Javed Malik, Secretary of Planning Commission in his opening remarks. "We need creative ideas and innovation to make our cities better and hazard resilient."

The Government of Pakistan's Creative Cities concept, as presented in the Pakistan Framework for Economic Growth 2011, focuses on city development that can encourage and nurture talent, technology and tolerance and hence, transforming them into engines of economic growth.

The conference was arranged by Planning Commission in collaboration with UN-Habitat.
