Young Land Surveyors Train in STDM Use and Application |

Abuja, Nigeria, 4 May 13
Seventeen young land surveyors recently gained hands-on experience in the use and application of Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) in Abuja, Nigeria, 4-6 May 2013. Directly preceding the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) Working Week conference, the Training of Trainers (TOTs) was organised by the Global Land Tool Network Secretariat which is hosted by UN-Habitat, International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), FIG Foundation and Young Surveyors Network (YSN). |

Some 30 participants from the West Africa region last week congregated at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), for a an eye-opening training on transparency in land administration. Organised jointly by UN-HABITAT and the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) the workshop attracted participants from Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia. |

Experts to discuss transparency in land administration |

UN-HABITAT and the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), in cooperation with the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) have held a three-day expert group meeting on Transparency in Land administration at the UN headquarters in Nairobi , Kenya on 29-31 January 2007.
Land remains a highly complex and contentious issue, UN-HABITAT said in a statement. “It is a critical element in achieving target 11 of the Millennium Development Goals on “Cities without slums”. It is also a critical element in the wider development agenda. There is a clear and urgent gap between the vast demand for skills in this area, and the capacity to deliver at different levels. |

Sounding the alarm on forced evictions |

Saying that the Millennium Development Goals targeted the significant improvement millions of slum dwellers by the year 2020, the Executive Director said not only was the global community falling short of this target with an additional 50 million people having been added to the slums of the world in the past two years, but that the practices of forced evictions were worsening the lives of millions of urban poor each year. |
