If women do not feel safe, the city is unsafe. And this means providing safety from the home and all those places in between—streets, parks, schools, neighbourhoods and other public spaces. It must be a continuum – from door to door, day and night.

We mark the annual International Youth Day at a time of sadness for the tragic murders of youth leaders in Norway, but with the hope that more young people around the world will carry the torch for freedom, democracy and good governance. Our young generations are the future, and we need all their vitality, creativity and optimism.

PLANNING NEEDED AS COMMONWEALTH CITIES DOUBLE IN SIZE IN A GENERATION  

By 2025, UN projections suggest that almost 1.2 billion people will be living in the Commonwealth’s urban areas. Today the figure is about three-quarters of a billion. Every day it increases by 65,000.

On behalf of UN-HABITAT, I wish to express my deep condolences to the Government and people of Kenya and the families of those who were victims of Monday's fire, and my hopes for a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
