Statement (G77 + CHINA)

Almost a year ago, representatives from all around the world gathered in Rio de Janeiro and reiterated their commitment to sustainable development, recognizing once more the need to adopt a threefold approach – economic, social and environmental.Nothing shows more clearly how intertwined are these three dimensions of sustainable development than the dynamics of cities, which clearly reveals that a shortcoming in one of them adversely impacts the others.

Address by Dr. Joan Clos Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT at the ISK Annual Dinner
Nairobi
It is a great honour for me to share my thoughts with this relevant gathering of Land Professionals in Kenya, and especially on a topic that is very close to my heart, “the Role of Land Professionals in Tackling Informal Settlements”. I am sure you are aware that UN-Habitat is the United Nations agency mandated to promote socially sustainable urbanization in towns and cities. This includes tackling informal settlements, without which sustainable urbanization cannot be attained.

Statement (INDIA)

Today, the world is in the midst of a massive urban transition unlike that of any other time in history. We live today, for the first time in history, in an urban century- more than half of us live in cities, and we’re headed toward 70% of people living in urban areas by 2050- a change with vast implications both for human well-being and for the environment. Almost all of this growth will be taking place in developing countries where urban populations are growing at over 3 percent per year, as opposed to less than 1 percent in the more developed regions.

I am very honoured to have been invited to this Second World Urban Forum and say a few words at this opening session. Together with my South-African colleague at that time Mrs. Sankie I chaired the First World Urban Forum in Nairobi in May 2002. The idea was to find a more informal way to focus on the Urban challanges. The key word was dialogue. Some 1200 people met in Nairobi, now 6000 people have registered for the Second Urban Forum. It is an impressive number and it shows that the problems and possibilities of urbanisation is gaining an ever increasing attention on the global agenda. I am fully convinced that also this Second World Forum will be as open, as informal, as democratic and as inclusive, as it was in Nairobi. I am glad to hear that a Third World Urban Forum is already being planned to take place in Vancouver'in 2006. In a way the Nairobi Forum was a historical in creating a new way of international co-operation, outside the UN protocal, but inside the main stream of the world challanges.

Statement by Ms. Nicole Miade Adviser to UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY 61 session SECOND COMMITTEE Agenda Item 53
New York
We have spoken today about the urgent and complex challenges posed by human settlements, particularly impoverished, peripheral urban communities. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) focuses in this session on one of its long-standing priorities — addressing the link between human settlements and On the one hand, human settlements may result from the mass movement of people displaced by natural disaster. Without humanitarian supplies, construction materials, or financial resources, disaster victims are often forced to leave their rural communities for camps or urban areas in search of shelter and livelihoods.
