Address to the East Africa Model United Nations
On behalf of Dr. Klaus Toepfer and the whole United Nations family, I am delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you to the United Nations in Nairobi. In a world that has become more interconnected through commerce and communication, the United Nations system is the only global political body for both dialogue and action. Nearly every country is represented in the United Nations, and each has the right to speak out on issues of peace and development, looking for common solutions to shared problems.

Speech on World Habitat Day in Brussels |
Brussels, Belgium
Every year since 1985, when it was first designated by the General Assembly, World Habitat Day has been celebrated on the first Monday of every October. On this day we are asked to reflect on the conditions of the living environment or our habitats, focusing on the state of human settlements and on progress made, and persistent and new challenges for their sustainable development. This year it has been decided that we should reflect on the theme of city to city cooperation.

Launching of the Global Campaign for Good Urban Governance in India Opening Session |
Delhi, India
It is with great pleasure that I address the concluding session of the launch of the campaign for good urban governance in India. This event has been a resounding success and I wish to thank all those persons, both behind and in front of the scenes, who have made this event possible. The effort involved in conceptualising and organising such an event is considerable and I can appreciate the sacrifices of time and personal convenience that have been made. In my opening speech I particularly mentioned the staff from the Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation.

The World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, presents a unique opportunity for us to think of all the people around the world, who have been struggling for the defeat of all kinds of discrimination. The victorious fight of the people of South Africa against the apartheid system gives us hope to consider that racism and all kinds of institutionalized discrimination can be successfully fought and eradicated from our human settlements.
