Address by Mrs. Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT On the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development
New Delhi
I am deeply honoured to present this keynote address to such a distinguished forum. Our drive for sustainable urbanisation is perhaps the most important challenge facing humanity at the dawn of our planet’s new urban age. And this occasion marks the first time that key decision makers from the world’s most populous region are gathered in quest of a new vision for sustainable cities by the year 2020.

Geneva
It is a great honour for me to appear before you today, in my capacity as the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), to address the first meeting, in 2007, of the Group of 77 in Geneva. As some of you might recall I have had the pleasure of appearing before your meetings at the time I served as the UNCTAD Director for the Office of the Least Developed, Land-locked and Island Developing States. I was also serving at the time as the Executive Secretary of the Third UN Conference for the Least Developed Countries. I have always been gratified by the strong support, which the Group of 77 has always extended to the weaker among them. So I am pleased to be back. And I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you everything of the best for 2007

Nairobi
This session of the Governing Council has before it some very important issues and equally important decisions to make. For this reason, we have been working arduously with the Committee of Permanent Representatives and its Bureau to ensure that the programme and the organisation of work allows for a judicial balance between dialogue and decision making.

Address by Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi, and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT on the occasion of the 12th Summit of the Comesa Authority of Heads of State and Government
Nairobi
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to this meeting in Nairobi. It is a great honour for us that you are gracing the United Nations headquarters in Africa with your presence here. As you know, there are four headquarters of United Nations in the World. After New York, the main headquartes, we have Geneva and Vienna. Nairobi is the only UN headquarter in the developing world. Today we find ourselves gathered here at the home of the United Nations Environment Programme, the agency that works to protect our planet’s natural environment, and UN-HABITAT, the agency of which I am the Execuctive Director which works for the built environment. This meeting could have been held elsewhere in this wonderful city, and so it is with a special word of appreciation to Your Excellency, President Kibaki, that we in the United Nations Office at Nairobi extend to you our thanks.

Promoting South-South & Triangular Cooperation in Support of Sustainable Urbanisation By Anna Tibaijuka Executive Director, UN-HABITAT, Director-General, United Nations Office at Nairobi at the 15th Session High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation
New York
I am honoured to be part of the deliberations of this high-level panel on south-south cooperation. South-south cooperation is a centrepiece of UN-Habitat’s mandate and way of doing business. It has been so since the adoption of the Habitat Agenda by member States in Istanbul 1996. This global plan of action calls for enhanced cooperation, transfer of technology, and the systematic exchange of knowledge, expertise and experience at all levels to meet its twin goals of “shelter for all” and “sustainable urbanisation”.

Message By Anna Tibaijuka Executive Director of UN-HABITAT and Director General of UNON On The Occassion Of International Youth Day
Nairobi, Kenya
I am particularly pleased by the theme of this year's observance of International Youth Day: "Be Seen, Be Heard” It is a most appropriate theme. With over 200 million youth living in poverty, 130 million illiterate, 88 million unemployed and 10 million living with HIV/AIDS, the case for a renewed commitment to working with youth for attaining the Millennium Development Goals is vital. Young people must be seen as equal partners in achieving these Goals and in realizing the Global Partnership Initiative. As you are all aware, we are at the halfway mark to the target date of 2015 for attaining these goals, and the time has come for accelerated action.

We have worked in close collaboration with their local authorities and other partners such as the private sector.

I would like to start by offering my apologies for not being able to attend this meeting in person, which is a matter of some regret to me. It gives me great pleasure to be with you today. I myself was a student of economics in Sweden in the 1970s. It is an honour and a pleasure for me to address this 12th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. As the Director General of the United Nations Office in Nairobi, I am delighted that this conference is being held in Africa in this beautiful city of Accra. Although the Conference will address global issues of interest to all countries, this venue should provide an excellent setting and opportunity to pay attention to some of the specific issues facing Africa, the continent, as we all know, continue to lag behind others in our common pursuit of global peace and prosperity.

Message from Anna Tibaijuka, UN Under-Secretary General & Executive Director, UN-HABITAT on The International Youth Day

What better time, then, to strengthen our commitment to empowering youth as agents of change, partners in solving our shared global challenges?

Statement of the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka on the occasion of the Baghdad Conference
Baghdad, Iraq
Housing is a fundamental human right and it is the duty of all responsible governments to ensure that each and every citizen has access to adequate housing along with all basic infrastructure and services such as access roads, water and sanitation, electricity, other community services. The failure to do so in a timely and cost effective manner results in the proliferation of slums which are the breeding grounds of disease and deprivation, the loss of human dignity and ultimately deep rooted frustrations that find vent in violence both within homes and outside.

It is a great honour and pleasure for me to welcome you all to the Gigiri complex for what promises to be a very fruitful time of reflection and discussion on a subject matter that is at the core of our activities as international organizations. I do recognize that we all have different roles to play, but whether you are a trainer or a user of the services rendered by our language specialists, the training of these specialists, particularly in the most sought after language combinations, should be a matter of great interest to us all.
