A combination of traditional and innovative financing mechanisms has been used to capitalize the Trust Fund. Since 2003, the water and sanitation trust fund has received funds to the tune of USD 125.8 million. Of this amount, USD 95.5million towards the general water and sanitation trust fund while the sum of USD 30.3 million was earmarked for activities such as the Lake Victoria and Mekong Region water and sanitation initiatives.

Other Contributions
The Water and Sanitation Programme has received other contributions for emergency projects of humanitarian nature. So far under this category of contributions, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) has provided funds to the tune of USD 214,651 for emergency assistance related to communities affected by floods in Laos while BASF Social Fund for post tsunami reconstruction in Cuddalore India (USD 301,000) and enabling access to water and sanitation facilities for Koshi flood affected people in India and Nepal (USD 145,000). UN-HABITAT has embarked on developing a resource mobilization strategy.The process involves identifying donor interests, policies and priorities and at the same time undertake an aggressive approach to market the trust fund achievements so far with the aim of broadening the donor base by attracting resources from the traditional bilateral donors and non-traditional donors such as foundations and the private sector. With this, we anticipate to achieve an annual budget of between USD 20 million and USD 25million."
