Results achieved thus far

  • Internal review of ongoing activities in the water and sanitation sectors in Mali.
  • Review of the existing policies and strategic documents developed so far in the country towards the achievement of the MDGs in water and sanitation and the updated PRSP document.
  • Identification and refinement of pilot projects to improve water supply and sanitation services in the neighborhood of EDM-SA, the water company’s water catchments on Niger River in Bamako.
  • In line with the decentralization process, the approach toward the development of a general strategy to better organize the small scale water vendors in Bamako was revised and amended in the draft programme document. This activity was performed closely with the Municipal authorities, Ministry of Urbanism and Habitat, Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water resources and the water company (EDM-SA).
  • The final selection of Water Demand Management pilot sites for the reduction of water consumption in one national hospital, a military barrack and in seven public buildings. The results of this assessment will be a basis to the development of a citywide Water Demand Management strategy with the introduction of new water and sanitation devices standards. Servicing the urban poor will also be considered in this component. The component was developed in close collaboration with the Water Company EDM-SA.
  • Identification of local partners and development of the WAC programme implementation institutional framework.
  • Partnership development with local institutions and donors to develop synergies and collaboration framework. Main partners will be the Netherlands Cooperation entity in Mali, CIDA, AFD, and the African Development Bank.
  • Refinement of the Human Values in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education in Schools (HVWSHE) action plan; training of a core team of trainers who will backstop the implementation of this component.
  • A WAC II programme document validation workshop (26-27 July 2005)
  • Signing of an MOU between UN-HABITAT and Government of Mali
  • Development of a cooperative agreement between Ministry of Education of Mali and UN-HABITAT for the implementation of VBWSHE.
  • Development and processing of a cooperative agreement with WaterAid Mali, CREPA Mali and the Bamako District regional office for Water resources and Energy.
