Haiti

The official theme for this year’s WHD celebration, "Cities, Magnets of Hope" took on a local flavour in Haiti, dubbed "information for better human settlements planning". The official ceremony, composed of an exhibition and a conference, was organized by the Ministry for Planning and International Cooperation and UN-HABITAT. In his welcoming remarks, the Minister for Planning and International Cooperation pointed out the need to "reflect on the human habitat in general and in particular on the effects of migration in cities".

UN-HABITAT's officer in Haiti, focused on the agency’s theme saying that it was important to obtain information from the grassroots in order for planners to efficiently and effectively tackle the issues of growing cities.

New York

UN-HABITAT in partnership with NGO Committee on Human Settlements hosted roundtable and panel discussions in observance of the WHD in New York City. Representatives from State, Local government and civil society gathered at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium to respond to the 2006 Day's theme - “Cities, Magnets of Hope”. A representative from Battery Park City Authority in Lower Manhattan, presented the unique urban design and vision of Battery Park City, and its pioneering “green” development. Battery Park City is home to America’s first green residential high-rise – the Solaire – and all development on its 92-acre downtown property must adhere to strict environmental guidelines to maximize energy efficiency and minimize water usage, among other provisions. Following the Roundtable discussion, presentations continued from Civil Society organizations on issues of migration and settlements, one of the unique historical features of New York City.

The George Washington Law School, Washington DC, USA, is organizing a National Forum on the Human Right to Housing on 21 September.
