Statement by Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka Executive Director UN-HABITAT on the occasion of Launching the collaboration between the National Swedish Police Board and UN-HABITAT POLICE PLATFORM FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT

	Today is a milestone, when the United Nations Programme for Human Settlement (UN-HABITAT) and the Swedish National Police Board (SNPB) join forces to enhance the governance of safety at municipal level through democratic policing and improve the role of Police in Urban Development. With the valuable support of the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency, the two agencies will promote democratic policing in urban areas, as well as foster a better involvement of the police in urban governance, planning and management, and advance a culture of community crime prevention in urban settings.

	It is an honour to report to you today with an update of the activities of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. This was an invitation that was gladly received and had to be given top priority, coming as it did from my own boss and mentor, Prof. Geoffrey Mmari. I am glad God has enabled me to make it from New York where I was attending the UN General Assembly. I am delighted to be here on this asuspicious occassion.

	It is a great honour and privilege for me to accept the Honorary Degree conferred upon me today by the prestigious Warsaw School of Economics. I must start by expressing my deep and humble appreciation to this School as well as the many others involved in initiating and supporting this highly significant gesture of recognition.

	It is with a deep sense of honour, gratitude and humility that I accept this prize, not only for myself but also for my colleagues at UN-HABITAT who have been by my side in our campaign for sustainable urbanization. We continue to seek an end to homelessness, urban poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and suffering throughout the world. If we cannot secure the human habitat, we shall not be able to secure the environment. Sustainable urbanization is a prerequisite for sustainable development.

Thirteenth Commission on Sustainable Development

	New York I am honoured and privileged to participate at the opening of the 13th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development to report on the outcome of the twentieth session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) held during April 4 to 8, 2005 in Nairobi. I thank H. E. Ambassador Ashe, the Chair of this session for his presence at our Governing Council.


the Global Chemical Giant BASF signing of the letter of Intent

	Nairobi UN-HABITAT’s mandate to achieve ‘Adequate shelter for all’ and ‘Sustainable human settlements’ presents a formidable but often forgotten challenge for the international community. In the context of the effective implementation of the Habitat Agenda and the Millennium Development Goals, UN-HABITAT is asked to strengthen local authorities, community organizations and non-governmental organizations so they may be more effective in the spheres of education, health, poverty eradication, human rights, social integration, and infrastructure.


High Level Panel to Commemorate International Women’s Day

	New York I am honored and privileged to participate in this high level panel to commemorate International Women’s Day, March 8 2005 on the theme “Gender Equality Beyond 2005: Building a More Secure Future”. Let me start by expressing my warm appreciation to the UN Division for the Advancement of Women, for graciously giving me the opportunity to address you all today. I would like to extend my congratulations to Ms Rachel Mayanja on her appointment as Assistant Secretary General, and Special Adviser to the UN-Secretary General on Gender Equality and the Advancement of Women.


International Meeting to Review the Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States

	Mauritius I am honoured and privileged to participate in this high level segment to review the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). At the outset, allow me to express my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to the governments and peoples of those Asian and the East African countries, who were affected by the terrible tragedy of the Tsunami that struck the region several weeks ago. This tragedy is a grim reminder to all of us of the vulnerability of coastal regions, particularly the Small Island Developing States


Global WASH Forum

	Dakar I am honoured to have been invited by Sir Richard Jolly to chair the Global WASH Forum in Dakar and it is indeed a privilege and pleasure for me to join you at this inaugural plenary session of the Forum.
