N'djamena, Chad, 3 Mar 14
Chad’s president Idris Deby Itnohas declared that he would be requesting his prime minister and the minister in charge of urbanisation to give him a full briefing on how they intend to lay a road map towards achieving the recommendations from the meeting the African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (AMCHUD).
The fifth session of the Ministerial conference ran for four days in the Chad capital N’Djamena last week and saw a high turnout of leaders, including ten heads of state, from across the continent show their commitment to addressing urban issues in their respective countries. |

IDP settlement planning and strategy presented in Mogadishu |
Somalia, 16 Dec 13
Since the 1990s, armed conflict in Mogadishu and recurring famine in southern Somalia has resulted in the protracted and massive displacement of thousands of families – population movements of up to 20,000 people within a single week into or out of the capital. Since 2007, when fighting between government forces and anti-government militias intensified, an estimated 400,000 people have fled from the war zones in Mogadishu and settled along a 20-kilometre stretch of road leading out of the city. This has become known as the ‘Afgooye Corridor’ and is the largest single concentration of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the world. |
