Urban development meeting adopts new declaration on cities

The International Platform on Sustainable Urban Development, has adopted the “Geneva Declaration for a viable future in cities” with the objective of creating a world solidarity network for better human settlements.

UN-HABITAT and the Kenya Union of Journalists today signed an agreement which will see the global agency actively participating in Journalist of the Year Awards by awarding cash prizes to selected winners. At a ceremony in Nairobi, Deputy Executive Director Mr. Daniel Biau signed on behalf of UN-HABITAT while KUJ secretary general Ezekiel Mutua represented the union.
City Council and UN-HABITAT launch new safety convention for Nairobi

UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka on Wednesday launched the Residents Convention for a Safer Nairobi for All and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Local Government to make the capital safer and replicate the project in other Kenyan urban centres.
Africities mayors pledge better urban services

Mayors and local government officials from across Africa at the weekend concluded the Third Africities Summit in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with a pledge to work harder and cooperate more closely to provide better urban services to millions of citizens living in slums and informal settlements.
Striving for crime-free, safer cities

UN-HABITAT’s Safer Cities Programme and eThekwini Municipality are jointly organising an international conference in the South African city of Durban aimed at keeping up efforts to reduce crime and insecurity in towns and cities around the world. The conference on Sustainable Safety: Municipalities at the Crossroads will be held from 25-28 November.
