Dr. Clos named in top 100 on armed violence reduction

UN-Habitat Executive Director Dr Joan Clos has been named as one of the top 100 most influential actors in the global fight against armed violence.

The list, which was compiled by Action On Armed Violence, features prominent United Nations leaders, government officials, executives of non-governmental organisations and non-profit bodies, celebrities and survivors of violence who work in various capacities to reduce and prevent armed violence. According to the organisation armed violence which kills more than half a million people each year.

World mayors commit to make cities crime and violence free

Improving urban public spaces

UN-HABITAT has formally notified the Federal Government of Mexico that it will support efforts to institutionalize the recovery of urban public spaces, and to share its experiences with other countries in the region and globally.

The announcement follows a three-day seminar 22-25 November on inclusive public spaces for sustainable cities which drew more than 350 local and international delegates.
Safer cities, safer lives: no more child soldiers in Somalia

In a rare visit to the Somali capital by a senior United Nations official, Ms. Radhika Coomaraswamy, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, announced on Thursday that she had secured a commitment from the Prime Minister and President of Somalia to end the recruitment of children by the Transitional Federal Government.

Green spaces for Gaza

Applications pour in for UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund

The UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund is growing increasingly popular with youth groups across the developing world judging by a 40 percent rise in applications over last year. Among regions showing the largest increase in applications are Latin America, the Middle East and Central Asia.
