Africa’s first Hip-Hop Summit

Shouting their message in full volume to more than 500 participants at the first African Hip-Hop Summit in Newtown, Johannesburg, leading Hip-Hop artists from around the world teamed up with UN-HABITAT last month to help give young people a voice in their affairs.

Didier Awadi, one of Francophone Africa's most prominent rap artists, and winner of the 2003 Radio France International ‘World Music Award', has been nominated as a UN-HABITAT “Messenger of Truth” for his contribution to raising awareness among African youth of the commitments made by the Heads of State to achieving the Millennium Development Goals which aim to halve world wide poverty by 2015. On behalf of the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Mrs. Anna Kajumolo Tibaijuka, and Kenya 's Minister for Local Government, Hon. Musikari Kombo, presented a certificate to Didier Awadi at a ceremony at the Alliance Francaise in Nairobi.
Civil society groups from East and Horn of Africa to meet in Nairobi

Civil society groups from 12 East and Horn of Africa countries will gather at the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) in Nairobi from December 6-8 to discuss regional concerns they deem important for the agendas of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised countries and the European Union next year.
Youth Take Their Rightful Place at World Urban Forum

UN-HABITAT's Executive Director, Anna Tibaijuka, launched a new Global Partnership Initiative for Urban Youth in Africa yesterday . Youth from Africa, mayors from many cities around the world and representatives of civil society organizations gathered at the launch to highlight the various initiatives that young adults in Africa are involved in, and which require support.

African youth leaders told a United Nations expert group meeting on urban youth employment in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, that young people ought to have a stronger say in decisions affecting their employment prospects.
From the back streets to the catwalk

Children from the slums and back streets of Nairobi swapped their everyday wear for the latest high fashion to join Miss Universe and Miss Kenya on the catwalk at a fundraising evening to highlight the plight of street children. The 12 July event was arranged as part of the Exodus Initiative of the German Foundation for World Population (DSW).
