UN-Habitat launches a Multifunctional Clean Energy Centre

UN-Habitat launched the construction of a Multifunctional Clean Energy Centre at St. Christine Community School Centre in Kibera Kenya. The project which is funded by DANIDA and UN-Habitat, is a joint initiative by the local community, Under the Same Sky project, and Umande Trust in partnership with VE International (Denmark).  It is the first of a series of Multifunctional Clean Energy Centres that UN-Habitat plans to construct in other Sub-Saharan African cities.
Urban Energy Unit discusses energy efficient buildings with Kenya architects

UN-Habitat presented the ‘Energy Efficiency in Buildings in East Africa’ (EEBEA) project to approximately 100 architects and town planners of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK). The architects had gathered in Nairobi for their annual breakfast to discuss ‘The Role of Smart Technology in Buildings’.
Global Energy Network for Urban Settlements holds Interregional Steering Committee Meeting

On the sidelines of the Sixth Session of the World Urban Forum held last September in Naples, Italy, UN-Habitat convened an Interregional Steering Committee meeting to review the status of the Global Energy Network for the Urban Settlements (GENUS) initiative and to discuss the draft Anchoring Strategy of the initiative beyond the Development Account Support.
UN-HABITAT and BASF Foundation to set up energy centre in a Mozambican slum

UN-HABITAT will collaborate with the municipality of Beira and the BASF Social Foundation to improve living conditions of slum dwellers in Munhava slum, in the city of Beira, building a Multifunctional Clean Energy Centre (MCEC).

Tibaijuka pleads for energy for the urban poor

UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka said in a statement to the fourteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development in New York that poor people living in towns and cities around the world had benefited very little from conventional energy policies, with an estimated 2 billion forced to cut down trees and use other traditional fuels for cooking because they had no electricity.
