Experts to discuss transparency in land administration

UN-HABITAT and the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), in cooperation with the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) have held a three-day expert group meeting on Transparency in Land administration at the UN headquarters in Nairobi , Kenya on 29-31 January 2007. Land remains a highly complex and contentious issue, UN-HABITAT said in a statement. “It is a critical element in achieving target 11 of the Millennium Development Goals on “Cities without slums”. It is also a critical element in the wider development agenda. There is a clear and urgent gap between the vast demand for skills in this area, and the capacity to deliver at different levels.
UN-HABITAT and Action Aid sign cooperation agreement

In a fitting conclusion to the Second World Urban Forum in Barcelona, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) leaders and UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Anna Tibaijuka, today signed a historic agreement that will elevate the working relationship between the United Nations system and local governments around the world to a new level. The agreement is aimed essentially at localizing the Millennium Development Goals to which world leaders committed themselves in the year 2000.

Sachs Calls for Innovative Solutions to Stemming the Growth of Slums

The Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the Millennium Development Goals today called for practical, innovative solutions to stemming the growth of slums. Professor Jeffrey Sachs told participants at the Second World Urban Forum that slum-upgrading projects must work at scale and not simply at the pilot project level if they are to be effective in meeting Millennium Development Goal 7, Target 11, which aims to improve the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2020.

The Fourth Global Forum of Parliamentarians on Habitat, which was held in Berlin, Germany, on 12-14 May 2003, adopted the Berlin Declaration calling on governments to increase financial support for the realization of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of improving the lives of 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2020. Governments were also called upon to ensure the availability of predictable financial resources for UN-HABITAT to strengthen its work on poverty alleviation.

UN-HABITAT will play a key role at the 3rd World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan, to mark World Water Day on 18 March, where it will raise issues of concern about how cities cope with water management. At the opening ceremony, the agency will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Asian Development Bank aimed at forging a new Water for Asian Cities partnership similar to UN-HABITAT's highly successful Water for African Cities programme.
