African planners mull urbanization challenges

With an accelerated pace of urbanization which is projected to result in over 300 million new urban dwellers in the next 20 years, planners in Africa are faced with the daunting task of ensuring that the development takes place in an orderly manner.

UN-HABITAT has unveiled a new Programme Document for the occupied Palestinian territory covering the years 2010 and 2011 at a seminar it held on the challenge of sustainable urbanization and the need for effective spatial planning. The gathering was chaired by the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Dr. Mohammad Shtayyeh.

Three Egyptian City Profiles published: Tanta, Rosetta and Menouf

For the first time, city profiles that include the new Rapid Urban Sector Profiling for Sustainability (RUSPS) themes: Basic Urban Services and Local Economic Development were published. Additionally, one of the profiles contains a seventh theme, Cultural Heritage, because of its high relevance for Rosetta.
New Egyptian envoy to UN-HABITAT

The new permanent representative to UN-HABITAT from Egypt, Mr.Saher Hamza, presented his credentials to the Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka on 24 November, 2006. Mrs. Tibaijuka said Egypt is fully funding a strategic UN-HABITAT urban plan for 48 small cities in Egypt at a cost of US$7million.
Boosting secure tenure and good urban governance in the Middle East

Delegates at an Arab cities meeting held in Cairo last month agreed to promote UN-HABITAT’s campaigns for secure tenure and good urban governance and stressed the need for land strategies for the region
