The UN-HABITAT Cairo office

The UN-HABITAT Cairo office oversees three projects with an overarching mandate of providing quality technical assistance and support to promote balanced, responsive and sustainable urban development that facilitates adequate quality of life and shelter for Egypt’s population.

The Office is embedded within the General Organization of Physical Planning (GOPP) and provides hands-on technical support and assistance through a team of both international and local staff. The UN-HABITAT team, while working most closely with its main partners at GOPP also maintains strong links with other important urban planning and development stakeholders such as the Ministry of Local Development, local authorities, local communities, the private sector as well as private consultants.

While mainly involved with UN-HABITAT’s Egypt projects, the office currently also oversees the UN-HABITAT project portfolio in Libya. Combined, the overall value of projects in those two countries amounts to approx $25 million ($12 million Egypt, $13 million Libya). Funding comes almost entirely from the national governments of Egypt and Libya respectively.
