Burkina Faso celebrated World Habitat Day for a whole month this year for the 26th time. Highlights includedthe broadcast of a documentary film on flooding, with posters around the capital, and a message by Mr. Yacouba Barry, Minister of Housing and Urbanism on climate change. A public convention was held during which a storm water project at the Bangr ' Wéogo city park in Ouagadougou was launched, thanks to funding of USD 12.6 million (XOF 6 billion) from the West African Development Bank. The 2011 Scroll of Honour Award Winners

UN-HABITAT is pleased to announce the 2011 Habitat Scroll of Honour Awards to the following recipients. This is the most prestigious award given by the United Nations in recognition of work carried out in the field of human settlements development. The aim of the award is to honour individuals and institutions instrumental in improving the living conditions in urban centres around the world. For the first time, UN-HABITAT is recognising a set of good practices as well.

New African cities climate change initiative

UN-HABITAT this week announced a new drive to raise awareness in African cities about climate change problems so that proper mitigation and adaptation plans can be put in place. A pilot programme for local authorities will start in five cities – Mombasa (Kenya), Kigali (Rwanda), St Louis (Senegal), Walvis Bay (Namibia), and Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso).
Rio group gets Bahrain award

UN-HABITAT's global campaigns launched in Burkina Faso

Several thousand residents of an informal community on the outskirts of Ouagadougou on 12 October gathered to witness the signature of a plan of action to launch UN-HABITAT’s global campaigns on urban governance and secure tenure in Burkina Faso. The plan provides for spending amounting to US$600 million over the next seven years.
Values-Based Water Education gains Momentum in West and Central Africa

A Training of Trainers workshop in Values-based Water Education was held in Dakar, Senegal from 12-14 May 2004 to show education experts from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Senegal the most appropriate approaches to introducing water, sanitation and hygiene into the existing school curriculum.
