Promoting non-motorized transport for solid waste management in informal settlements
  Print This Page!

In Kenya, there have been successful efforts in Kibera (Nairobi) and Mirera-Karagita (Naivasha) to establish non-motorized transport as an alternative and efficient tool for improving the operations of water and sanitation service providers and generating alternative income sources and business opportunities for low-income residents of informal settlements. In Kibera, the project is an integral and complementary part of UN-Habitat’s water and sanitation programme while in Mirera-Karagita it is a component of the “Mirera-Karagita Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Environmental Management Pilot Project”, which is part of a wider initiative for Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor. UN-Habitat aims to upscale these models for application in other countries and regions.
