In recent years, UN-HABITAT has been successful in urban transport issues in the context of efforts to promote sustainable urban development, most notably through interventions at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), international fora such as the World Urban Forum and professional networks.

Maintaining and expanding partnerships both within and outside the UN system is a central element of UN-Habitat’s urban transport strategy with relevance for both normative and operational activities. A viable cooperation exists with the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and the International Development Cooperation (GIZ). Under the provisions of the UNEP/UN-Habitat Partnership Framework, UNEP Transport Unit and UN-Habitat Urban Transport Section will carry out joint activities during the 2010-2011 biennial period.

  1. Promoting Sustainable Transport Solutions for East Africa
  2. Promoting non-motorized transport for solid waste management in informal settlements
  3. Global Energy Network for Poor Urban Settlements (GENUS)
