Mbarara Grape Farmers Association, Mbarara District
Most of the inputs used in grape growing and wine production are from local materials. The land is owned by the farmers and not rented from elsewhere; labor is obtained from the farmers themselves. In addition, the cultivars or planting materials are locally sourced and the poles and wires and nails used for the fixing of the grape plants are locally procured. The manure used to fertilize the plants is produced locally by mixture of animal waste with soil. The bottles used for bottling wine are locally purchased. The use of local materials, farmers’ own land and labor ensures sustainability of the project.
