A new national award honouring local development best practices was launched in Cameroon this month to encourage municipalities to do all they can to improve living conditions.

The award supported by the Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance (FEICOM) and is known as the FEICOM National Award for Local Development Best Practices, was launched at a special ceremony 2 March by senior UN-HABITAT and government officials.

Carrying prize money of XOF 100,000,000 (approximately USD 200,000) for the winner and half that for the runner-up, the award will be conferred every two years following the first ceremony in December 2011.

UN-HABITAT provides technical assistance to the FEICOM, and serves on its steering committee.
