UNEP GC.26 Side Event: Transport, Infrastructure and Green Economy

Start Date : 21 Feb 11
End Date : 21 Feb 11
Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Transport is central to social and economic activity, yet current patterns of transport activity are unsustainable. The acute social, environmental and economic costs and externalities can add up to 10% of a country’s GDP. In particular, road transport accounts for 17% of global energy-related CO2 emissions and up to 90% of urban air pollution.

This event highlights the importance of investment in green transport and infrastructure for moving towards a green and low-carbon economy. A fundamental change in investment patterns is needed, based on the principles of avoiding or reducing trips through integration of land use and transportation planning; shifting to more environmentally friendly modes, such as public transport and non-motorized transport; and promoting cleaner and more efficient vehicles.

UNEP invites you to join this GC.26 side event where the Executive Directors of UNEP and UN-Habitat will engage with a high-level group of panelists and the audience in a discussion on two of the key sectors analyzed in the landmark Green Economy Report – transport and city development. Join and hear about existing opportunities for green transport and infrastructure as well as about the work and programs that UNEP is already undertaking with many member countries across the world.
