The Government of Japan has contributed USD 1.5 million to UN-HABITAT in Somalia to support the relocation of tens of thousands of internally displaced people.
A major humanitarian issue in Somalia, the large number of displaced persons is a result of conflict and drought. In Galkayo, in the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, there are some 75,000 displaced people whose numbers are rapidly increasing as people flee south and central Somalia.
A number of these families in Galkayo are expected to benefit from permanent shelter support and a restoration of basic public services.
Approximately 5,600 displaced people previously living inside Galkayo town are now residing at the Tawakal settlement. Physical settlement planning and durable shelter development have become essential to improving their living conditions.
Over the last five years, UN-HABITAT, in collaboration with the Government of Puntland State of Somalia, has helped improve the lives of 18,022 people in Puntland. In Bosasso, Garowe, Xaafuun, and now in Galkayo, UN-HABITAT has planned new settlements, constructed permanent shelters, and upgraded existing settlements.
The agency has also provided safe water, sanitation, and solid-waste collection, negotiated secure tenure for IDPs, conducted vocational skills training and created opportunities for livelihoods.
UN-HABITAT views this as an opportunity to “build back better”, by developing permanent shelter, basic infrastructure, and on-the-job and vocational skills training with the above-mentioned partners, to ensure that Somalis whose lives are affected by conflict have a strong foundation on which to rebuild their lives.
