In relation in to urban transport and energy, UN-Habitat has also been successful in establishing the Global Energy Network for Poor Urban Settlements (GENUS). GENUS is a dynamic new partnership and collaboration with multiple institutions and stakeholders involved in urban energy issues. The Network aims to encourage and support the design and implementation of energy-access programmes for the urban poor worldwide through the exchange and dissemination of best practices and technologies, awareness creation, advocacy, tools development, knowledge management and capacity building. GENUS is a global programme structured geographically to operate in Asia, Latin America and Africa. The focus of the Network is on addressing three key themes of energy access for the urban poor:
(i) Improved urban mobility for the poor;
(ii) Slum electrification;
(iii) Energy from waste.
