Manila, 11 Nov 09

The Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, the League of Cities of the Philippines, and UN-HABITAT jointly organized the Philippine Urban Development and Climate Change Forum on 11-12 November in Manila.

The meeting attracted more than 100 stakeholders including mayors, city administrators, and city planning officers from around the Philippines, officials from the national government representing the urban and the climate change constituencies, representatives from a wide range of NGOs, professional associations and the wider private sector as well as UN agencies who actively participated in the discussions and workshops.

The forum was organized to discuss how climate change would impact on sustainable urban development in the Philippines and to highlight the important role of cities in increasing the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.
The outcome document of the meeting is the “Urban Stakeholder Agenda for Action on Climate Change” which supports the implementation of the (1) National Urban Development and Housing Framework and the (2) Climate Change Act of 2009.

The Urban Stakeholder Agenda for Action on Climate Change commits Local Governments to strongly address Climate Change. It further emphasizes the need to strengthen the Climate Change governance framework to ensure efficient implementation of the Climate Change Act.
