Hundreds of millions of people in urban areas across the world will be affected by climate change. The vulnerability of human settlements will increase through rising sea levels, inland floods, frequent and stronger tropical cyclones, periods of increased heat and the spread of diseases. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday told a high-level delegation of mayors, local and regional authorities that he would ensure rapid urbanisation around the world takes high priority on the Rio +20 agenda because the battle for sustainability would be won or lost in cities.
Frequent floods, landslides, extreme hot weather and other natural phenomena are more frequently affecting our cities. This recent increase in occurrences is in part attributed to climate change.
