UN-HABITAT and the Government of Spain are a meeting in Seville on 15-16 October, 2008. The purpose of this meeting is to initiate a closer dialogue with major partners. This meeting will be an opportunity for you to engage in discussion with our executive management on the key challenges and opportunities facing UN-HABITAT in the light of the ongoing UN reform process and the implementation of our Medium Term Strategic and Institutional Plan (MTSIP). With almost a billion people, or one third of the world’s urban population, living in slums, the need for action has never been greater. It is for this reason that this meeting will seek to explore how the international community should be responding to the rapidly growing urbanization of poverty in the world and the role of UN-HABITAT in this effort. In creating the appropriate environment to deal with these critical issues, the enhancement of the institutional capacity of UN-HABITAT is vital. An important function of this meeting will therefore be to gather governments’ thoughts on the progress of the MTSIP thus far, and as to how matters can be progressed in the future. |
