Mrs. Tibaijuka received the new Permanent Representative to UN-HABITAT from Zambia on 5 December 2007. She told the new Zambian envoy, Ms. Christina Msadabwe, that UN-HABITAT was involved in the Sustainable Lusaka Programme, which aims to build capacity for Lusaka City Council and partners to implement the environmental planning management approach; and that Lusaka is the first city to benefit from the Water for African Cities programme as well as being one of the first cities to participate in the NEPAD City programme. The Executive Director also spoke about the Sustainable Kitwe programme in Zambia; and the Regional Urban Sector Profile Study, which covered the cities of Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Livingstone. She also stated that, through funding from the Government of Netherlands, UN-HABITAT undertook a review on Law, Land Tenure and Gender in Zambia. Mrs. Tibaijuka also stated that more that seven Zambian organizations have working relationship with UN-HABITAT to promote slum upgrading, basic urban infrastructure, environmental concerns, leadership and capacity building, among others. Ms. Msadabwe of Zambia called for the extension of UN-HABITAT’s activities to the rural areas of the country so that they can have permanent shelter.
