Background
To complement the objectives and achievements of UN-HABITAT's Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation (LV-WATSAN) initiative, a broader programme of development activities to revitalize economies in and around the fifteen selected secondary cities under the LV-WATSAN Initiative will be jointly implemented by several organizations of the UN system, namely, FAO, IFAD, ILO, UN-HABITAT, UNIDO and WFP, with financial support from the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), among other funding agencies.

Objectives
The major developmental objectives of LV-LED are
  • promote balanced territorial development in the Lake Victoria basin through enhanced rural-urban linkages,
  • alleviate poverty through the promotion of employment and other income-generating activities, notably through joint pilot projects,
  • reduce the rate of rural-to-urban migration in the region and
  • improve basic urban infrastructure, including in secondary towns, also as a means to contribute to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals.
