Background
Ksar Ait Benhaddou is situated on the south foot of the Atlas mountain chain. It has a population of 700 inhabitants and receives 130,000 visitors per year. It was founded in the 11th century. Ksar is on the UNESCO list of World Culturage Heritage. However, it risks losing its unique cultural values forever.
UNDP Morocco together with the Moroccan Ministry of Culture and UNESCO have been supporting the preservation of the Ksar Ait Benhaddou for many years. In 2003, UNDP requested the support of the Moroccan National LA 21 Programme to strengthen local community participation in the preservation of the site.
