Background and Objectives
Today Meknes counts 550,000 inhabitants. Its development is based on agriculture, food processing industry, handicraft production and commerce. The city has a great potential for developing tourism but suffers from a degraded cultural heritage. The Meknes Local agenda 21 Project was launched in 2002.
Activities
The main achievements of the Meknes Local Agenda 21 Project are:
- Preparation of the Meknes City Environmental Profiles in 2002
- Meknes City Consultation in January 2003 with some 400 actors to discuss the priority issues of sustainable management of water resources, cultural heritage management and promotion of tourism, and Access to urban services and social integration
- Adoption of Meknes Urban Pact to set the stage for further phases of the project
- Elaboration of issue-specific strategies and action plans by three inter-sectoral working groups around the three issues discussed during the 2003 consultation. Each working group brought together an average of 50 actors within extended working group meeting and 15 actors in reduced working group meetings
- Training organised for NGOs and CBOs aimed at structuring them and strengthening their capacities to participate in the LA21 process
- City Consultations attracting 500 participants in April 2004 to discuss the Meknes LA21 strategies and action plans
