Background and Objectives
Marrakech has a population of 860,000 inhabitants. Its economy relies mainly on tourism, handicraft production and commerce. Its development is very dependant from natural resources, especially water, which are in danger of depletion. The Marrakech Local agenda 21 Project was launched in 2002.
Activities
- Preparation of the Marrakech City Environmental Profiles in 2002
- City Consultation in January 2003 bringing together about 400 actors focusing on sustainable water management, cultural heritage management and promotion of tourism, and access to urban services and social integration
- Adoption of the Marrakech Urban Pact which set the stage for further phases of the project
- Establishment of three inter-sectoral working groups to define defined issue specific strategies and action plans around the three issues of sustainable water management, cultural heritage management and promotion of tourism, and access to urban services and social integration. Each working group brought together an average of 50 actors within extended working group meetings and 15 actors in reduced working group meetings.
- Training for NGOs and CBOs aimed at structuring them and strengthening their capacities to participate in the LA21 process.
- City Consultations with some 500 participants to debate the Marrakech LA21 strategies and action plans.
