Background and objectives
The Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz Regional Project (MOR/02/006) financially supported by UN-HABITAT, the Moroccan Ministry of Aménagement du Territoire and UNDP, is technically supported by the LA21 Programme and has been developed as an extension of the project - MOR/99/001. The project aims at:
- Formulating Local Agendas 21 in the urban centres of the Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz Region,
- Elaborating the urban component of the Regional Agenda 21 and of the regional development plan,
- Strengthening the environmental planning and management capacities of local and regional actors.
The project was developed during 2003 following a request of the Ministry of Aménagement du Territoire. Implementation started at the end of 2003 with the institutional set up including the selection of urban centres, recruitment of regional and that of local coordinators. At the inaugural workshop of April 2004, local coordinators and consultants were sensitised to the Local Agenda 21 approach and trained for the preparation of environmental profiles.
Urban centres initially participating in the regional project are: Chichaoua, Tahannaout, Ait Ourir, Kelaat Sraghna and Ben Guerir. The Essaouira Local Agenda 21 project is also being supported by the Regional Project.
