Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda consists of the three islands of Antigua, Barbuda, and Redonda. They are situated near the centre of the Caribbean archipelago. Around 30 percent of the total population of 90,000 (the 2001 Population and Housing Census projection for 2010) lives in cities. Population growth, the changing structure of the economy, and the process of urbanization and commercialization are exerting severe pressure on available land resources and housing. French

 

Benin
Benin joined the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme in 2012. Its population in 2011 was 9,325,032. The country features high urbanization rates of 40.8 percent. French

 

Botswana
Botswana joined the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme in 2012. It has a population of 2,065,398. In the period 2010-2020, Botswana will experience rapid urbanization rates of 7.7 percent. French

 

Burkina-Faso
Poverty is endemic in Burkina Faso, despite good economic performance and improving social trends. Poverty still affected 44 percent of the overall population in 2009, or 50 percent in the rural areas and 20 percent in the urban areas (Integrated Survey of Household Living Conditions, 2009). Burundi
The population in Burundi was reported to be 8.11 million in 2009, according to the International Monetary Fund. Burundi's economy is based predominantly on agriculture, which accounted for 45 percent of the gross domestic product in 2009. Although Burundi is potentially self-sufficient in food production, the civil war, overpopulation, and soil erosion have contributed to the contraction of the subsistence economy by 30 percent in recent years. Cameroon
In 2005 the population of Cameroon was estimated at 16 million (World Bank, 2006). The rural population stood at about 8.2 million (51 percent) in 2003, while the urban population was 7.8 million (49 percent). Yaounde, Cameroon's capital city, and Douala, the second-largest city, host 45 percent of the urban population. French

 

Cape Verde
According to the 2010 census (National Statistics Institute, 2010), Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, is home to 131,602 people. This is more than 45 percent of the population of the island of Santiago and around one-quarter of the population of Cape Verde as a whole. French

 

Côte d'Ivoire
In 2009, the population in Côte d'Ivoire was estimated to be 20.6 million. According to projections made by the National Institute of Statistics, there were 4.2 million people living in Abidjan in 2011. Abidjan is the country's most populated city and the second-largest city in West Africa, after Lagos, Nigeria. The population of Abidjan is expected to reach 5 million in 2018. French

 

Fiji
With an estimated population of 839,000 in 2007, Fiji is the second most populated country in the Pacific. Its urban population is estimated to be 435,000, 51 percent of the national population. Recently, urban growth in Fiji has accelerated and booming urban towns are developing outside the control and authority of the government and planners. French

 

Ghana
Ghana is one of the most successful countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of poverty reduction and democratic developments. The poverty rate fell from 51 percent in 1991/1992 to 28.5 percent in 2005/2006. French
