Ministers responsible for water in East Africa have backed a proposal to expand a UN-HABITAT initiative aimed at benefiting towns in the region.

Concerned about the increasing environmental problems of the Lake Victoria Basin, East African Ministers of Water commended UN-HABITAT on its leadership role in the design and implementation of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative.

Rapid urbanization and poorly maintained water and sanitation systems in towns bordering Lake Victoria are severely impacting the quality of water in Africa’s biggest lake, Anna Tibaijuka, the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, said today.
