Burkina Faso celebrated World Habitat Day for a whole month this year for the 26th time. Highlights includedthe broadcast of a documentary film on flooding, with posters around the capital, and a message by Mr. Yacouba Barry, Minister of Housing and Urbanism on climate change. A public convention was held during which a storm water project at the Bangr ' Wéogo city park in Ouagadougou was launched, thanks to funding of USD 12.6 million (XOF 6 billion) from the West African Development Bank. UN-HABITAT said this week that a newly restored park in an area damaged during a 2009 Israeli raid had inspired the building of more green spaces in the Gaza Strip as local residents and the agencies working with them to build back better. |

World Water Week opened in the Swedish capital this week with impassioned warnings by the Prime Minister, Mr. Frederik Reinfeldt, and UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, that the world was not doing enough to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people without safe access to water and basic sanitation by 2015. |
